How Do Ductless HVAC Systems Work?
You may already know of one type of ductless HVAC system—a radiant heater or boiler. These systems send heat throughout your living space by heating up objects in it such as the flooring. But the type of ductless HVAC installation we’re talking about is a forced-air, 2-in-1 system that provides you with either cooled or heated air into the rooms the air handlers are installed in.
Ductless HVAC installations are similar to heat pump installations. However, instead of having one outdoor unit and one indoor, ductless systems are comprised of a single outdoor unit and up to 4 indoor, wall-mounted air handlers. Each air handler is connected to the outdoor unit via a conduit containing a power line, condensate line, and refrigerant line. Additionally, each air handler has its own coil and blower fan to send individualized cooled and heated air directly into the space where it’s installed.
The Benefits of a Ductless HVAC Installation
Installing a ductless system, or forgoing traditional central systems for a ductless HVAC replacement, is not the best choice for all homes, but it’s a huge advantage for many. A house already equipped with adequate ductwork may be more suited for a conventional central system.
However, older homes with no ductwork, and homes with multiple rooms and multiple stories will find that ductless HVAC installation or replacement provide them with the following benefits.
- Energy Efficiency: A lack of ductwork means less heat loss and heat gain, depending on the season, which increases energy efficiency and costs you less to operate your HVAC system.
- Zoned Control Cooling and Heating: Since each room unit can be operated independently of one another, homeowners only need to heat or cool occupied rooms, saving money by leaving unoccupied rooms along.
- No Indoor Air Quality Problems: Damaged ductwork can contribute to a number of indoor air quality issues, as well as system efficiency issues. They accumulate damage relatively easily, and can contribute to up to 30% of air loss into unoccupied spaces.
