Reasons Your Home Has Low Water Pressure

You turn on a faucet one day, or maybe you’re getting into the shower in the morning, and you discover that the water is only coming out in a trickle. The water pressure has dropped and this isn’t a situation you want to deal with for long. It will interfere with many basic tasks around the house.

In this post, we’re going to look at some of the reasons you’re encountering low water pressure and what can be done about them. You may need the help of a professional plumber in Green, OH, and we have a team of experts who can help. We’re family-owned and look out for our customers, and your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Is the low water pressure only at one faucet?

Before we go any further, you need to know if the problem with the water pressure is happening all around the house or only at one tap. If it’s a single tap, then that narrows down the possibilities—the problem is probably a small one. Check the aerator for the faucet and clean out any silt in it. If that doesn’t work, you may need a plumber to replace the tap or locate any obstruction in its waterline.

A municipal problem

If the water pressure drop is happening all around the house, then the first thing to check is if your neighbors are experiencing the same problem. If so, then the trouble is with the municipal water supply. This occasionally happens because of municipal repairs or problems with the local water pump. Contact your utility company to find out when you can expect the water pressure to return.

Stuck water main valve

Do you know where the water main valve for your house is located? This is important to know because you can use it to shut off water to your house in an emergency such as a burst pipe. But this valve may also be the source of the low water pressure. If it becomes stuck, it may partially block off water flow. Find the valve and test it to see if this restores water pressure.

Broken pressure regulator

Your home may have a pressure regulator to prevent troubles with high water pressure. This valve can malfunction so that it cuts down on water pressure too much. You may need the regulator repaired or replaced.

Problems with the water main

The most serious troubles that can cause a drop in water pressure are problems with the water to the house. If your house was built more than 50 years ago, the water main may be made of outdated material like galvanized steel or cast iron, both of which will corrode over time. Leaking in the water main can account for a drop in water pressure, but corrosion and hard water can also create build-up inside the pipe that will throttle off the water supply and cause the water pressure to drop. Our plumbers can help with water main troubles, including repair and a full replacement.
