What to Check Before Calling for Furnace Repair

Though calling your local furnace repair company as soon as you detect a problem with your heat is a good habit to form, there are a couple things you can check and fix yourself before calling in an expert.

Check These 5 Things Before Calling an HVAC Expert

Thermostat

The thermostat acts as the brains of your heating system and your furnace won’t do its job without an order from a working thermostat. If you notice that your heat isn’t working, check your thermostat first. Is the display showing up? Is the information correct? If you can’t see the display or the display has the wrong information on it, you most likely have an issue with your thermostat, not your furnace. First try changing the batteries. If that doesn’t work, you may need a replacement.

Heat

Once you see that the furnace is working, make sure the heat is turned on.

Filter

One of the most common problems we see is a clogged filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow and can cause the system to overheat. If your furnace shuts off, make sure to check the furnace for debris and buildup. Try changing it and turning the furnace back on to see if that fixes the problem.

Emergency Switch

Some furnaces come equipped with emergency shutoff switches, which could be mistaken for a regular wall switch and flipped off by accident. Look for the red switch and make sure it isn’t in the off position.

Circuit Breaker

Is your furnace getting power to it? If you don’t feel any air coming out of the vents, check the circuit breaker for the ‘furnace’ circuit. Try flipping it on and off and turning on your furnace again. If your furnace continues to blow a fuse, don’t mess with it and consult a professional.

If you’ve checked these things and still can’t detect the problem, it’s time to consult your local HVAC company. If you’re in need of furnace repair in the Akron or Canton, Ohio areas, give Crown Group Ohio a call at 330.499.4988.
