New Year’s Resolutions for your Home

It’s the beginning of a new year and while others are making resolutions to save money, exercise more frequently or learn a new skill, consider shifting your focus towards something else this year – your home.

Declutter

Throughout the year, it’s easy to accumulate a lot of new stuff. Take time this month to declutter room by room, drawer by drawer, getting rid of anything that you and your family don’t need. Be sure to donate anything that you think others could find useful. Once you’re done decluttering, work to put a system in place in order to keep your home clean throughout the rest of the year.

Lower your energy usage

Consider cutting energy usage in your home by turning off the lights when you leave a room, lowering the thermostat by a couple of degrees, washing only full loads of laundry and sealing leaky windows and doors. Not only will this help the planet, it will help to lower your utility bills as well.

Commit to your HVAC system

Your heating and cooling system should be inspected and cleaned by a professional bi-annually.  If you’ve put off HVAC maintenance, now is the time to address it. Furthermore, put a reminder on your calendar to change your filter every 2-3 months. Doing so can improve your home’s air quality, lower energy bills and prevent costly repairs.

Make extra mortgage payments

The more house payments you can make in a shorter period of time, the faster you’ll pay off your mortgage. Consider setting a little money aside each month in order to pay extra on your payments. Additionally, make a commitment to paying your mortgage on time in order to avoid penalties and added fees.

Make it safe

The beginning of the year is a good time to test all of your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, fix any broken locks on windows or doors and properly store any valuables. Consider installing a security system for added protection.
