Did you know that your HVAC settings can negatively affect your sleep? These tips will help you maximize your comfort levels so you get the best rest possible.

Keep it cool

Keeping your bedroom cool and dark will lead to optimal sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the ideal sleeping temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Keeping your room warmer or cooler can lead to restlessness and can negatively affect the quality of your REM sleep. If you have a toddler or a baby sleeping in your room, you may want to consider raising the temperature a bit – keeping it between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Get the humidity under control

When humidity levels are too high, it can feel damp and muggy, which is not only good for your home but can also cause health issues for you and your family. When humidity levels are too low, it can cause it to feel dry, which can make you and your family more susceptible to dry skin, hair and nasal passages. Either way, humidity levels that are off will negatively impact your sleep. A humidifier or dehumidifier can help you get to the ideal range which is between 40-45%.

Utilize a ceiling fan

Turning a ceiling fan on at night in your bedroom can help to create a comfortable downdraft and can circulate the air in the room, keeping it fresh and breathable all night long.

Invest in a programmable thermostat

A programmable thermostat will adjust the temperature in your home based on pre-programmed settings. For example, you can set the thermostat to automatically lower the temperature during sleeping hours. Not only can a programmable thermostat help you get a better sleep, it can lead to decreased energy usage and utility bills, and may even extend the life of your equipment.

Consider a zoned HVAC system

A zoned HVAC system involves multiple thermostats, each responsible for controlling a different part of your house independently. With this type of system, you can adjust the temperature in the bedrooms only, which will utilize less energy and lead to increased comfort.

Turn on some white noise

While this isn’t necessarily an HVAC tip, some sleep better with white noise. A noise machine (or the hum of a ceiling fan) can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer as it can drown out common nighttime noises that disrupt sleep.
