Benefits of Air Conditioning

Perhaps you live in an older home with no air or your unit is in dire need of a replacement. Regardless of your situation, if you’re debating whether or not installing central air is right for you, take a look at some of the benefits!

Air Conditioning Benefits

Resale value

The initial cost of installing a new air conditioning system can seem daunting but when you think about the fact that you could recoup some or all of the money when you sell your home, the cost is much more digestible. If central air is a priority to a future buyer, no AC or old and outdated equipment could mean the difference between an offer and no offer.

Comfort

There’s no doubt about it, a central air system leads to far more comfort than window units. This means no more freezing cold rooms (unless you want them to be freezing cold!) and no more tossing and turning in the middle of the night because the window unit is too loud or is taking too long to cool the area. With a central air conditioning system, you can simply set it and forget it.

Entire home cooling

Single room units do just that, cool a single room. And, they need to run for a long time in order to do so. Central air offers whole home cooling with the click of a button. If your home is bigger, you can install a zoned system to maximize comfort.

Indoor air quality

A central air conditioning system with a clean filter will decrease the amount of dust and debris inside your home. This can reduce allergies and prevent you from getting sick.

It’s quiet

Frankly, central air conditioners just make less noise. Because most of the equipment is located outside and not in a window, you oftentimes can’t even hear it indoors.

Aesthetics

Similarly, because most of the equipment is outside, a central air conditioning unit does not take away from the look of each room in your home. Window or single room units can be bulky and obvious. Central air units can be installed on the side or back of your home so they can’t be seen from the road.

What to Check Before Calling for AC Repair

Know something is wrong with your air conditioner but not quite sure what? Oftentimes, an AC professional will be necessary. However, if you’re lucky, the problem may just require a simple fix that you can do yourself. Check on a few things before calling for AC repair. It could save you a ton of time and money!

Check These 6 Things Before Calling an AC Technician

Air Filter

A clogged filter is one of the most common problems we see. Clogged or dirty filters can disrupt air flow, resulting in inefficient AC performance. Check filters often for buildup and debris and replace when necessary (generally every 2-3 months or more). Not only could this fix your current problem, but changing your filter regularly will also help you to avoid future problems, repairs and even replacement.

Thermostat

Make sure your thermostat is turned on (it seems silly, but believe us, we’ve seen it happen). Look at the settings to make sure it’s configured correctly and set to “cool.” Make sure the thermostat temperature is set to a lower number than the current indoor temperature.

Safety Switch

Some units are equipped with emergency or safety switches that get mistakenly flipped. Look for the red switch and ensure it’s not in the off position.

Circuit Breaker

Is your air conditioning unit getting power? Check to make sure there isn’t a tripped circuit. Turn the breaker on and off to see if your unit starts working correctly. If your AC continues to blow a fuse, it can be dangerous. That’s the time to back away and call a professional.

Vents and Air Registers

Make sure nothing is blocking your vents and registers, making sufficient airflow impossible. Move furniture, rugs and other décor out of the way. Also, make sure they are all fully open so air can flow freely.

Outdoor Unit

Ensure the outdoor unit is free of debris or blockage. Dirt, leaves, bushes and trees can all pose a problem. Check your condenser coils to ensure they are clean.

When to Call a Pro

If you’ve checked out all of the above and your AC problem persists, seek an expert’s help. Likewise, if your unit is freezing up or you believe it could be low on Freon, it’s time to call a professional.
